A membership to the LA Zoo is a MUST for any toddler parent! I've been coming to the zoo myself for years even before I had kids, because I enjoy animals and zoos. I remember my first time thinking the LA Zoo was going to be some dinky zoo... but it's massive and totally legit! It's not the San Diego Zoo... but who is? This is a totally legit zoo to rival any other big city zoo, and that was surprising.
Visited during their LA Zoo Nights. Got tickets online. Beautiful lights and decorations. Even though most animals are sleeping, it was a fun place to spend a warm November evening. There's a beautiful Christmas tree at the entrance and the music puts you in the holiday spirit.
We used to go a lot to the L.A. zoo when we had a family membership. It was $130 for the whole family for the whole year. Its really worth it better than paying everytime you go. I think we went like 6 times in one year even though we live in Kern County. After 2 visits it paid it off. It was My 2 kids, my wife , my mother in law and my self plus we got 2 extra tickets for friends and family.
This is one of the best places (and deals) to come to in LA. Our small children love it. We have been coming here for years. The trick is to arrive early before parking fills up and the crowds arrive. We even had a Birthday party here. The annual family pass price is practically free. There have been talks about privatizing the ownership, I hope this doesn’t change the experience for us loyal LA zoo-goers. We often pack a picnic lunch and find a bench (opposite the monkeys) to have lunch. The more you come here, the less chances you have of getting lost. It’s a maze. All part of the fun. 5 Stars!
There is a a playground that is great for toddlers, and even that just got an overhaul. On Friday's they have another indoor play place called the California Condor play center (or something like that). My son LOVES the petting zoo. This is a very nice petting zoo where you DON'T feed the animals, so they have a very nice temperament. It's not like roadside, fair or farm petting zoos where people feed them, so they're always looking for handouts and can be aggressive. These animals are very nice and well cared for. They also have volunteers around the zoo some mornings with animals they tell you about and you can sometimes touch. We also enjoy the seasonal holiday displays the zoos does... specifically their Halloween displays!
Decided to attend opening night of the LA Zoo Lights. I must say it was fun and my family enjoyed it from start to finish. The one exhibit I enjoyed the most was the twinkle tunnel. The price for admission was reasonable and didn't have to pay for parking. I highly recommend.
They are constantly renovating to make larger habitats for the animals. Even in my 10+ years living in Los Angeles, I've seen a lot of improvements that have seen a large positive change in many of the animals lives. The Gorilla and Elephant habitats in particular are very nice. There are tons of interesting kinds of animals throughout to look at!
We have a great time here! Highly recommend it. But stay home on particularly hot days. We find we're there a few times a month at least, but rarely in the summer...
