Okay I'm really not trying to play the race card but I had a less than stellar experience in this store today. When I walked in all of the cashiers looked up at me didn't say hi or anything and they immediately went back to the conversation they were having.,not even acknowledging my presence. People walked in right after me and they greeted them and asked if they needed help finding anything and how their day was going but with me absolutely no interaction whatsoever. I walked past the registered several times they just stared at me. Several of the employees even walked around the store asking people if they were OK and just ignored me and I was obviously searching for something. I stayed in the store for over an hour not ONE word was said to me. At one point they even all turned their backs to me when I went up to the register. I also had a few books in my hand and one of the ladies who works there spoke to the woman right beside me and asked "do you need me to hold anything for you?" She had one book and I was holding five , again IGNORED. I was absolutely the only person of color in the store there were about six customers. Everyone of them except for me. I'm really disappointed with the service I received and I won't be going to location again I'd rather order online or find another place to buy plays.
Samuel French Film and Theatre Bookshop is the greatest place on planet earth! I even accidentally locked myself in the bathroom once, and it is still the greatest place on earth! Their selection is unbelievable and always changing, their staff is incredibly awesome and helpful, and they are beyond supportive of theatre and film artists (of all disciplines) in the local community by curating and hosting events, signings, and performances in the green room every week. Samuel French is my haven, and we local performers are incredibly lucky and privileged to have it available to us. Go visit and take advantage of all of the opportunities they provide. Cheers!
I recently picked up the agency book from here that actors have been talking about for years. It says that the book is updated but while researching the agencies listed I noticed that a lot of the agencies seem fraudulent and have no website, not available websites, outdated websites or are obviously scams. Also many of the agencies in the book that say they take mail in submissions don't when you look at their website! The agency I know for sure is a scam is Xpose Entertainment Inc. How can such a trusted industry source be providing actors with a list that is full of fraudulent agencies? They obviously don't update this book! Please peoples livelihoods are at stake here. Also this small book is not cheap and I could have easily found this information online. Please don't buy this book.
I wished this were not the case and that anyone who loves this art form could be able to enter a place of business and share the love with others like minded.
Only place in town that had the plays and books I was looking for. Super nice staff. Helped me with my bags. Bravo Samuel French
Not exactly sure what it is, but it seems the sales staff favor persons of a specific outward appearance. No matter if you're a serious actor-writer who is literally dying for the craft, they will see you how they see you and basically choose to downright ignore you.
If you need a sign that this place is legit, the prejudice some people experience here is unfortunately one. A shame that even in this bookstore, you're automatically type-casted.
As a thespian of the American stage, Samuel French is a crucial part of life. Online purchasing is truly the greatest experience online purchasing can get. The store front is a different story.
It's not really their fault. If you look at the American theatrical climate, it's easy to distinguish which types of people make it to high professional status. Therefore, the "nons" kinda get the leftover collar bone, but do we have to do this in a bookstore!?
