The tar pits are interesting and quite unique to see. The museum has some great fossils and really interesting things to see. Although the museum probably should charge less for admission ($15 per adult). The tar pits themselves are in an open plaza and you can walk to any of them. The tar pits are right next to LA museum of art. If you do go and see cones in the middle of the fields that indicates a small tar formation. If you have kids prepare to try to clean tar off hands. Soap and water won't work. Bring nail polish remover or acetone.

You have to do this. I have been four times and still have fun. There is an active dig, though it is not always in operations. They also have some dig material from the nearby parking structure that was recently moved to their site. The inside of the museum is fun and there are things to see and do. They could probably use an update from the 70's type decor but it still a lot of fun.

We really enjoyed with our young boys (7-3 yrs). The grounds are free to visit but the museum itself costs to go in. The car park is $12 - but there is some limited parking outside the grounds metered at $1/hr. I thought the museum is well put together giving the history of the area and what's been found there - though an hour is plenty of time to see what is there. Its worth seeing the main tar pit with the well-known statues as well as the lesser pits dotted around. Most fun for me was seeing the tar seep out of the ground randomly around the park (usually marked with neon cones so you don't get stuck!). Shows how even today the area is geologically active. Good half day with the kids, highly recommend.

I have lived in LA county, and visited LA many times, but for some reason never made it to the tar pits until now. What a seriously awesome place!!! It is so cool! Tar just oozing out of the ground! The little museum is very educational, and is a great component of the experience, but can't really compete with the large lake of tar and bubbling methane gas! I went with my 3 year old, my husband and my mother in law, and we all had a great time! Very much worth dealing with traffic in the area!

It's amazing to have a place like this in the middle of the city. You can see the big tar pit in front of the museum for free. You may wonder where the rotten egg smell comes from. It's natural asphalt. You can see the methane comes out of the tar surface. It's amazing. I recommend you to enter the museum and feel how it'd be if you trap in a tar and see the big fluffy mammoth.

The tar and water pools outside make for great pictures.
