I had a very unexpected but cordial conversation with Ambassador Lee today in front of the consulate where I was protesting against the barbaric South Korean dog meat industry. He said he agreed with me but that it was problematic for an American to be lecturing another culture about this topic. He asked me how would Americans react to a person from India lecturing them about eating steak. I said that I understand that people eat animals, but that the severe abuse and torture of dogs (that often purposely preceeds the slaughter of dogs in South Korea and is generally accepted or ignored by the majority of Koreans) is a crime. I also urged him to support Korean Assemblyman Pyo, Chang-won, who is sponsoring legislation to strengthen the animal rights in South Korea. He did most of the talking and I did not get a chance to make my final point about his cross-cultural concern; that being, - I dont think the dogs(or the cows) will care to much about the race, gender, ethnicity, religion or sexual identity of who is advocating on their behalf for humane treatment. We all must be their voice.
