I love this spot. It is poorly kept up but has an incredible view of the hills and city. It also has a great Frank Lloyd Wright home, but as I said, is poorly kept up. Many homeless in the area as well degrade this beautiful spot. LA can do better for these people and this park.
Oh, and there's a museum (free, and worth it) and the recently reopened Hollyhock House, so it has that going for it.
When I want to picnic in a park, I'll often choose Barnsdall Art Park for the hill of grass at the front because this hill overlooks all the unique neighborhoods and structures towards the east end of the Hollywood strip. I always love views from foothill areas, and this is one of the few good ones that the central area offers. The elevated hilltop experience mutes much of the traffic and city noise while offering a view that's front and center to an attractive corner of the Hollywood and Los Feliz area. The proximity to the hospitals and grocery store make this a fitting location to grab some snacks and slip out of the stress down below for a while. There's usually some other pleasant gatherings there enjoying a relaxing escape.
Wright house Hollyhock is lovely. There is a theater and art gallery. Nice little park to escape to. They also have rooms for art classes.
Eclectics love to hang here, along with a nice mix of homeless, artist vagabonds and general freaks, intermixed with a minority of normal, everyday type folks. Definitely a good place to people watch--and a must for sunsets on smoggy or cloudy days: one of the best views in Midtown that you'll find.
For a park in the heart of urbania, this is an amazingly quiet, peaceful little plot of land, mostly because people living a block away don't know it's here. I never discovered it until 10 years after moving to the neighborhood--and we shop at Jon's--sharing the same block--all the time.
Beautifully restored house on property. Staffed by volunteers. Park is a small (~2 acre) green space at the to of the hill, with most views looking north and west. Usually busy but not overrun. Great place for late afternoon picnic. Parking is limited but free.
