The first place I suggest when people are visiting from out of town! You get a beautiful view no matter what time of day you go, plus it's the official viewing location of the Hollywood sign. During the day, you can see out into DTLA and get a sense for how expansive the LA region is. At dusk, you can watch the sunset over the ocean as all the lights flip on in the city. At night, you get to see what man-made wonder of the city as all the lights fill your view. There are shows in the planetarium going on all day, and at night you can look through the telescopes. There's a small restaurant here, but you can eat much better than that in LA.
This is my go to place whenever friends would visit from abroad. I love how it overlooks the city of LA and it gives you that Hollywood feel you see in the movies. I love everything about this place except one: parking. It's understandable that the funds obtained from parking will be given back to the park, but I can't help but see it as a pain whenever visiting. Also, looking for a spot is hard as well since space is limited.
Between the observatory and the available hikes nearby this place was amazing. Take your time in the observatory since there is simply so much to see! If hiking to the backside of the Hollywood sign the walking directions from Google maps are correct as of this posting. It takes about 1.75hrs at average pace, and gets you some spectacular views of the area. Lots of small turn offs onto paths that don't look official but they are, just stay alert.
This is a cool park with lots of hiking and fun activities. My family went to the observatory to see the Hollywood sign, hiked one of the short trails there, and rode the train on the south end. It would be nice to not have to leave the park and re-enter somewhere else to get to different attractions. We spent around $10 for two train ride tickets and parking at the observatory. Definitely worth it.
This is a historic Los Angeles location. Very beautifully maintained, has academic value and for movie buffs has movie history value. A film called "Rebel Without a Cause" was filmed here with James Dean, Natalie Wood and Sal Mundo in the golden age of Hollywood. The true value of this location is the views of the entire Los Angeles basin. Parking is easy, but tough to get. Wear comfortable shows because you will be walking up hills and then down hills. Thousands of tourist so be ready to deal with that. Ideal for great photo opts. My favorite spot in LA.
